Parodia leninghausii naturally appears in areas where there are light frosts on winter nights. Young plants have a spherical shape, which with age becomes columnar. The yellow tower cactus grows up to 1 metre tall and 12 cm. in diameter. The stem has about 30 ribs. Older plants grow clustered shoots. The spines are a long, golden colour, and are soft and not prickly. The yellow flowers, five centimetres in diameter, appear at the tips of shoots that have reached a height of more than 20 cm.
