Guzmania lingulata
English name: Droophead tufted airplant/Scarlet star
Latin name: Guzmania lingulata
Family: Bromelids - Bromeliaceae
Origin: Central and South America
The scarlet star’s natural environment is the rain forest. It is a perennial epiphytic, growing on tree trunks and branches. The leaves are grouped in a rosette, the centre of which forms a funnel shape. The inflorescence grows above the leaves, taking on an orange to red colour. The scarlet star is often grown as a potted plant. After flowering, the main rosette dies, but the young suckers that grow around it can sometimes be cut off and take root.
