The Japanese aralia is an evergreen shrub growing from 3 to 6 metres in height, with thick, branching stems. The leaves, on long petioles, are palmately lobed, leathery, spirally arranged and 20 to 50 cm. long. The leaf edge is serrated. The flowers are small and white, clustered in inflorescences that appear in late autumn or early winter.
